Workers' Rights

Workers’ rights are human rights that recognize the dignity, freedom, and equality of all people in their roles as laborers. Within the international human rights framework, workers’ rights ensure fair, safe, and just working conditions and economic participation.

They include the right to:

  • Safe and healthy working conditions

  • Fair wages and equal pay for equal work

  • Freedom from forced or exploitative labor

  • The right to rest and leisure, including paid holidays

  • Freedom of association and the right to organize, join trade unions, and bargain collectively

  • Protection against discrimination, harassment, and unjust termination

These rights are upheld in international instruments such as:

  • The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Articles 23–24)

  • The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) (Articles 6–8)

  • Core ILO Conventions on labor standards
